Obesity is a serious health problem that restricts you not only on a day-to-day basis but also leads to disorders that are extremely prejudicial to your wellbeing: diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, strokes, respiratory disorders, joint problems and infertility.

Obesity surgery is the only effective treatment for patients with a serious degree of obesity.

Minimally invasive stomach reduction surgery

Manga Gástrica

  • Average operation time: 1 ½ hours.
  • Time in hospital: 24 hours.
  • Post-operative period: 5 -7 days.
  • Suitable for: patients with obesity characterised by a BMI greater than 30.

  • It is the intervention that offers the best combination of safety and efficacy.
  • It gives excellent results and minimal complications.
  • It reduces the size of the stomach without affecting the absorption of nutrients, avoiding the need for the patient to take vitamins for life, as occurs with other techniques.
  • Weight loss proves more straightforward than with other procedures, because thanks to the intervention the patient will notice a reduced sense of hunger.
  • It is technically much simpler than traditional stomach-reduction surgery.
  • It avoids the long-term complications, such as the appearance of internal hernias, that tend to accompany other obesity treatment techniques.

The technique used by Dr Carlos Molina is safer than the standard technique, and due to its complexity is only carried out by expert surgeons:

  • Minimally-invasive technique carried out by laparoscopy with only three small incisions.
  • Double safety closure: a preliminary suture is carried out with a latest-generation endostapler and then the staple line is sutured by hand.
This increases the safety and durability of the intervention.
  • Thanks to this technique, hospitalisation and post-operative times are kept to a minimum.
  • The risk of possible haemorrhages or fistulas is reduced.
  • Greater therapeutic efficacy is achieved.
  • The frequency of future dilations is reduced.

Average loss of 60% of excess weight

About a month ago I was operated of vertical gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) in Cenyt Hospital. I can only thank the treatment received by all their staff. Especially to Doctor Molina, his professionalism is of a level of excellence, Antonio (operating room nurse) who accompanied me at times when I felt vulnerable and made me feel safe and calm, to Estefanía (plant nurse) who made the hardest hours after the intervention were bearable and Patricia (patient care) for those nights of indecision before the intervention for advising her Hospital and stand me in my low hours of bimanan. I CAN ONLY TELL THEM THANK YOU ALL!

The treatment at the hands of Dr Molina was rigorous, professional and highly attentive from the outset. At the first appointment he gave me a full and clear explanation of the existing bariatric surgery options and set out the most appropriate in my case. Since the operation, which was five years ago now, he has always made good on his initial commitment to follow up, support and resolve any query or problem. I wouldn’t hesitate to put myself in his hands again and I recommend him because he has completely lived up to my expectations. Since the operation I have lost more than 40 kg, I am healthy and feel happy.
Thank you, Dr Molina!

Eight years ago I put myself in the hands of Dr Molina for a bariatric operation. From the first consultation right up to today, I have always had warm and friendly treatment and I have been attended, both by him and all his team, with great professionalism.

Approximately 10 years ago I weighed around 160 kg and I was advised to have a consultation with Dr Molina. He explained all the bariatric surgery options and advised me about the most suitable one for me. I’ve never regretted the decision I took for a moment, because in 10 years I have lost 80 kg without needing to give up a highly varied diet. I don’t hesitate to recommend Dr Molina, a great specialist whose treatment is second to none. I have no hesitation in continuing to trust in him and his exceptional team. Many thanks for everything!

Other surgical procedures:

Traditional stomach-reduction technique

What does it consist of?

A gastric bypass consists of reducing the gastric capacity to its smallest size, dividing the stomach into two parts and connect the smaller part directly to the small intestine. This ensures that the absorption of calories and nutrients is reduced, leading to subsequent weight loss.

  • Average operation time: 3 hours.
  • Time in hospital: 3 –5 days.
  • Post-operative period: 8 –10 days.
  • Suitable for: people with a BMI greater than 40.
  • A widely corroborated technique with good results.
  • Provides rapid and lasting weight loss.
  • A more complex operation than the gastric sleeve.
  • Longer and more uncomfortable post-operative phase.
  • The digestive system is substantially altered.
  • The patient will need to take vitamins for life after the operation.
  • May lead to complications such as dumping syndrome.
  • The patient needs to radically change his or her eating habits.
  • The larger part of the stomach is removed and it is no longer possible to conduct endoscopic checks, complicating the diagnosis of possible pathologies.

Adjustable and reversible laparoscopic technique

What does it consist of?

With this technique, laparoscopy is used to insert a silicone band that compresses the upper part of the stomach. The purpose of the device is to limit the amount of food and the speed with which it passes through the stomach. Once in place, the specialist can adjust the band so that it exerts more or less pressure depending on the needs of the patient.

  • Operation time: 45 min.
  • Time in hospital: Out-patient operation, not requiring a hospital stay.
  • Post-operative period: 5 –7 days.
  • Suitable for: people with a BMI greater than 30.
  • The anatomy of the stomach and the rest of the digestive apparatus is not modified.
  • Involves a rapid and simple operation.
  • It is completely reversible.
  • If the band is not perfectly adjusted it does not work. Occasionally it is not possible to find the mid-way point. Either it is too loose and therefore does not have any effect, or it is too tight and causes difficulties in swallowing and regurgitation.
  • The weight loss it produces is less significant and slower than other techniques such as the bypass and gastric sleeve.
  • It requires a high degree of collaboration from the patient and lifelong monitoring to adjust the band.
  • Long-term complications may arise such as slippage of the band, embedding or the mechanical failure of the system (for example, it may puncture and deflate on its own).

Endoscopic weight reduction treatment

What does it consist of?

A gastric balloon involves inserting a silicone balloon into the stomach using an endoscopic technique. The balloon inflates with saline solution until attaining a volume of 400 –700 cc.

  • Average intervention time: 15 minutes.
  • Carried out with sedation.
  • Time in hospital: out-patient procedure.
  • “Post-operative” period: 1 –3 days.
  • Suitable for: people with a BMI greater than 28.
  • Does not require surgery.
  • Greater chance of success than with a diet.
  • Follow-up continues for a year to try to remediate bad habits.
  • Re-education is the basis for long-term success.
  • Does not require the use of medication.
  • May be repeated several times.
  • The balloon can remain in the stomach for only six months.
  • It causes nausea for the first few hours.
  • If habits are not changed, the patient can easily regain the weight that has been lost.
